The Petromax HK500 is without doubt the most famous kerosene lamp in the world. Thanks to its impressive light output of 400 watts, the lamp combines a unique high-pressure technique with an elegant, nostalgic design.

With its intense light, the robust pressure lamp not only fascinates retro design lovers, globetrotters and outdoor enthusiasts, but it is also used by humanitarian aid organizations and armed forces around the world. Thanks to its borosilicate glass cylinder, manufactured by Schott, it can resist very high temperatures and is thus a reliable source of light that can be used in all weathers.

The excellent light output of the Petromax lamp results from a simple, yet fascinating principle: Under pressure the kerosene is conducted into a carburettor. There the evaporated fuel reacts to the mantle which is impregnated with luminous salt. The result is a bright, warm light. In order for this principle to work flawlessly, more than 200 component parts of the lamp are still assembled by hand. The long Petromax tradition is based on this guarantee of quality and durability.

The legendary HK 500 produces 400 watts approx. (1 Watt = 1.25 CP/HK candle power, Heffner candles). Its height is 40 centimetres approx. (15.75 inch) and its tank capacity is around 1 litre (1.76 pints) around 8 hours burning time).

The Petromax HK 500 is also available as an electric light with a E27 socket (Edison 27). The ideal desk lamp.

I ordered these items from France and was delivered quick quickly by UPS (cheap formula) The lead time announced was twice reduced, wich fits me but can trouble someone who organise something on specific date (final date was antipated the day before delivery) Package was well prepared to prevent any damage and I was happy to congrats and thanks the delivery team with a short message wich get an answere : nice to feel a "real" team behind a website ! I tried the lamp a couple of days after. 1st try with alcohol pre heat (not burner) with success : 3 cups of alcohol burnt and no trouble for lighting. The few troubles on first start sometimes reported by users with tightening nuts required sounds fixed before delivery by manufacturer) The lamp worked well during half an hour approx before I turn it off. Thenk I tried a second start, quick start this time, with the burner : fine also. Days after I retried quick start without any trouble (some users reported that it s better tighten the nuts after first use but these sounds well tighten first try and check if is difficult once the mantle is burnt, not to dammage it. Tried outside and quickly inside to evaluate the light power, by night and with all other lights off (1 picture of the lighted kitchen snaped from the dark living room enclosed). Inside must be well vented and limited use (forbidden by user instr) Also the good quality of petrol is important (low aromatic ratio) to avoid bad smells. But definitely outside use lamp ! Conclusion : first order from Varuste was perfect experience since the 1st email of info request, quickly answered to the after delivery "thanks" emails. This lamp is both nice to see, easy (quite) to use and efficient. Ok this is a bit expensive... but quite unique on market... so.. I am an happy guy.
